Abstract:

Collection of 5 letters (16 pages) written by Watson Blanchard in Todds Valley, California, between January 20, 1864 (shortly after his arrival in California) and April 1865, to his mother, Martha Blanchard (3 letters), his brother Ruel Blanchard (1 letter), and his aunt Mary G. Reed (1 letter), all in Maine. Watson Blanchard, of Madison, Maine, registered for the Civil War draft in 1863. In his letters to his mother he expresses relief that he got away to California before being called up and writes of the draft in Maine. He also discusses his relationships with women, both in Maine and in California, and the amount of money he is making.
